February Activities At Powerhouse

February may be the shortest month on the calendar but we are not short on exciting programs here at Powerhouse Science Center! Tot planetarium and Science Storytime are back by popular demand, and we have some special Valentine’s Day activities you will not want to miss! In February we will also be celebrating National Engineers Week with a creative construction challenge in Design Lab. We look forward to seeing you soon.

FEBRUARY 2 | FREE MUSEUM DAY |10:00AM-5:00PM

Free Museum Day is a popular yearly event that encourages all members of the community to get out and experience the Sacramento’s museums. On this day admission to Powerhouse exhibits will be free all day. We will also have a DJ and several community partners joining the fun including the Sacramento Mineral Society, Sacramento Public Library, Papaya Pythons, and more! Also make sure you come hungry, the Squeeze Inn Truck will be serving up delicious dishes to hungry visitors. Please note the last entry to the science center will be at 4:00PM.

FEBRUARY 9 | SCIENCE STORYTIME |11:00AM

Join us in Nature Discovery to listen to a science-themed story. Afterwards, participate in fun, hands-on activity! In February we will be reading The Day It Rained Hearts, by Felicia Bond. Afterwards, you can experience a cloud in a bottle and learn more about the rain cycle.

FEBRUARY 9-10 | HEART SCIENCE WEEKEND |12:00PM-4:00PM

February is a celebration of all things heart related, so in advance of Valentine’s Day we’re diving into the science behind this important organ. We are excited to welcome special guest scientist Samantha Francis Stuart from UC Davis Pharmacology who will bring interactive activities including an electrocardiogram (ECG) demonstration, heart stations to explore how big your heart is and how it functions, and the opportunity to see a real animal heart.


FEBRUARY 13 | HOMESCHOOL SCIENCE: PHYSICS |12:00PM-4:00PM

Dive into the wonderful world of waves! We can find waves all around us, not just at the beach. Students will explore a model of a wave to understand its properties before exploring two common types of waves – light and sound. Click HERE to register.

FEBRUARY 14 | LOVE UNDER THE STARS |6:00PM-8:30PM

Join us for a special adults-only event where we will explore the power of attraction in everything from planets to potential mates. Learn more about the science behind pheromones and hormones while enjoying a mini aphrodisiac food sampling and take in a special planetarium show. This is a 21+ event, valid ID will be required. Your ticket includes one complimentary beer or wine, additional drinks may be purchased at the event.

FEBRUARY 16 | TOT PLANETARIUM |11:00AM

Join us for a family-friendly planetarium show geared for young explorers. Our tot planetarium will cover the basics of space travel, a view of the night’s sky, and the chance to touch a real meteorite!

FEBRUARY 16-18 | CREATIVE CONSTRUCTION |12:00PM-4:00PM

In honor of National Engineers Week we are putting creative building skills to the test! In Design lab we’ll have an interactive game called “Save The Day” where you will draw different engineering challenges from a deck of cards. Afterwards, you will design and build an object that will save the day using a variety of materials. Have fun exploring the engineering design cycle where one challenge can have many different solutions.

FEBRUARY 23 | SNOWFLAKE FLURRY |10:00AM-11:30AM

Learn more about how these frozen phenomenon are made in nature and create your own snowflake art to take home.
