October Activities At Powerhouse

Fall has arrived and we are excited to jump into a new season with new and exciting programs. Blast off on an adventure at our Challenger Community Mission, dive deep into exciting STEM learning at our Homeschool Science classes and Family Workshops, or come for one your favorite Saturday Special programs.


OCTOBER 5| FAMILY WORKSHOP: DISSECTION DISCOVERY | 5:30PM-7:30PM 

Put on your gloves and get ready for some gross science!  Cut, peel, and identify parts of a real cow eye. Through this process, learn how eyes function and allow us to take-in the world around us. CLICK HERE to register.


OCTOBER 5 |INTERNATIONAL OBSERVE THE MOON NIGHT

In celebration of International Observe the Moon Night, we have a special planetarium show and other moon activities! It’s the time of the year when shadows get longer and the evening air turns chill, even the Moon seems different when fall begins.  Join us in the planetarium as we examine the eerie Moons of the season and then move on to stars and constellations you can see in the night’s sky.

Design Lab (12:00PM-4:00PM) Moon Phase Wheel | Create a moon phase wheel to take home that will help you easily identify what phase the moon is in.

OCTOBER 9| HOMESCHOOL SCIENCE: ENERGY WAVES | 3:00PM-4:00PM
Waves are not only found in the ocean but also in the sound we hear and the light we see.  Students learn how the sound they hear and the waves they see are connected by using Slinkys™, and tuning forks.  Then they design and test experiments to demonstrate how energy from sound waves can displace objects like salt and water. OCTOBER 12| SCIENCE STORYTIME | 11:00AM
Join us in Nature Discovery to hear Skeleton Cat, by Kristyn Crow. After nine lives, Skeleton Cat is back for his tenth, and he has big dreams: to be a drummer. After the story stay to study real skeletons from various animals.

OCTOBER 18| CHALLENGER COMMUNITY MISSION | 6:00PM-8:30PM
Experience the adventure! See what it’s like to work for NASA while performing hands-on science experiments. Work with a team to build a probe, support astronauts from mission control, and discover how tests are performed in space. A thrilling, interactive learning experience. All minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by paying, participating adult. Only paying participants will be allowed in the center for the duration of the mission. CLICK HERE to register.

OCTOBER 19 | TOT PLANETARIUM | 11:00AM 
A family-friendly planetarium show geared for young explorers that covers the basics of space travel and a view of the night’s sky. Tot Planetarium is recommended for space explorers up to age 6. Seating is limited; please arrive early to claim your pass.

OCTOBER 26 | CREATE & TAKE: WITCH’S BREW SLIME | 10:00AM-11:30AM
Put on a witch hat and mix a spooky, slime concoction. Take your green ooze home, but be careful of the creepy crawlies lurking inside! Witch’s Brew Slime is included in admission.

OCTOBER 26 | MARVELOUS METALS: A CELEBRATION OF CHEMISTRY | 12:00PM-4:00PM
National Chemistry Week is October 20-26, 2019 and this year we have partnered with the Sacramento chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) to celebrate Marvelous Metals! Join us in Design Lab for some special, hands-on chemistry activities that will highlight the awesome things that metals can do!

All activities are included with admission and every visitor will receive a fun Chemistry Week activity book.
