With school back in session and cooler temperatures in the forecast, change is in the air here in Sacramento! While we are sad to bid farewell to summer break we are excited to share all the new weekend programs and special events we have planned for September. Make sure you join us Labor Day weekend as we kick off our “Fall sky” planetarium shows!
WEEKENDS IN SEPTEMBER | INCREDIBLE POLYMERS
This month we will be exploring the science of polymers. While this word may not be familiar to you, polymers are all around us every day. So, what is a polymer? It is a molecule that is made up of a chain of repeating units. Think about it like a train where all the cars are exactly the same. Things that are made up of polymers can look and act differently depending on what molecules they are made from. They can be rubbery, stiff like plastic, or sticky and gooey! Every weekend in September we will be exploring the properties of squishy, slimy polymers. All the polymer programs listed below are FREE with Powerhouse admission.
SEPT. 1-3 | GALACTIC SLIME
Come to Design Lab and learn more about the makeup of a polymer and how it relates to the texture of slime. After you’ve learned the science behind the slime you can make your own to take home!
SEPT. 8-9 | POLYMERS AND PHYSICAL CHANGES
Add water to a mystery substance and observe the physical changes that occur. Afterwards, find out where this substance can be found in our everyday lives and take some home with you!
SEPT. 15-16 | EXPANDING POLYMERS
Explore how the polymers in water beads can absorb a large amount of liquid. Take some water beads with you to experiment at home and don’t miss the sensory experience of an entire pool full of these squishy spheres.
SEPT. 22-23 | OOBLECK
Is it a liquid? Is it a solid? Come explore the science behind this polymer with a number of exploration stations that highlight the unique properties of this slippery concoction. Stop by Design Lab to make a sample of your own oobleck to take home and experiment with
SEPT. 29-30 | SILLY PUTTY
Silly putty is a classic example of a polymer and the squishy, elastic physical properties they can exhibit. Join us in Design Lab to make your own silly putty to take home!
EXPLORE THE CHEMISTRY IN YOUR KITCHEN
SEPT. 1| SUPER SCIENCE SATURDAYS
We’re bringing back our popular workshop series where families can take a deeper dive into STEM concepts through exciting, hands-on activities. In the first of these workshops we will be exploring kitchen chemistry and examining the molecular changes that happen during cooking and baking. Visitors who register for this workshop will get a sweet real-life demonstrations of these changes by baking a cookie. Super Science Saturdays are designed for kids 5+ and require preregistration. CLICK HERE to learn more and register.
COME PARTY WITH US!
SEPT. 22| BIRTHDAY PARTY OPEN HOUSE
Stop in from 12:00pm-3:00pm for a FREE Birthday Party open house! See examples of our science-themed party packages and discover how Powerhouse Science Center parties are fun and exciting for your guests and easy on you! Click HERE to Learn more about our party packages and facility rentals.
LAUNCH YOURSELF INTO SPACE
SEPT. 28th | CHALLENGER COMMUNITY MISSION
The year is 2061. Comet Halley has entered our solar system and is approaching the Sun. A team of astronauts made up of scientists and engineers navigates through space in search of the comet. YOU could be a part of this team at our Challenger Community Mission! These missions launch families, friends, and space enthusiasts on an exciting voyage of discovery where you can experience what it it’s like to work for NASA. This event has SOLD OUT! Stay tuned for the next Challenger Community Mission date.
